The College of Architecture believes cultural competency and industry experience is essential to student success in a globalized workforce. We are committed to providing global perspectives and/or real work experience to our students before graduation. Through our semester away initiative, you’ll gain critical life experiences and become a better citizen of the world.

All undergraduate students must spend one semester away. This requirement can be met in one of three ways:

Study Abroad

We offer students many opportunities to travel the world. Through study abroad programs, you’ll take courses relevant to your degree and surroundings. Study abroad programs are faculty led.

Reciprocal Exchange

Our reciprocal exchange program allows you to enroll in classes at an international partner institution. These highly immersive opportunities are best suited for independent students with a flexible mindset. You’ll live and engage with people from the host country and receive coursework instruction in their native language.

International reciprocal exchange programs offered by the Education Abroad fulfill the semester away requirement. Students will need to discuss any reciprocal exchange opportunities with their advisors before they commit to a program. You’ll pay your tuition and fees to Texas A&M University.

Benefits of Reciprocal Exchange

  • Complete cultural exposure and immersion
  • Slightly less expensive alternative to a semester abroad
  • Earn pass/fail transfer course credit relevant to your degree plan

Internships

Internships give you valuable entry-level experience in your field of study. Some departments allow approved internships to fill the semester away requirement.

Semester away requirement qualifications are subject to change. Speak with your academic advisor before planning your semester away.
