Biography

Ellen Cassilly, FAIA, (BED) '83 is the principal of Ellen Cassilly Architect, an award-winning Durham, NC based architecture studio. Her career spans teaching, public service, and a significant body of both residential and commercial built work. She is also a regular mentor to young women considering the field of architecture. Her personal residence, designed as both home and community arts space, was featured in a full-page piece in the New York Times. Ms. Cassilly co-teaches the Design/Build Studio at NC State University College of Design, co-founded Durham Area Designers, a community design group that organizes community design charrettes and regularly advises the mayor and city council on various urban design issues, and consults regularly with other NC municipalities on revitalizing their downtowns. The student design/build projects, built for various local not-for-profits, have received multiple design awards. Ellen was inducted as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2017. She received her Masters of Architecture from The University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelors of Environmental Design from Texas A&M University.
