Department of Architecture Roadmap

Department of Architecture Roadmap

Three to five research focus areas:

  • Building Information Modeling
  • Architectural preservation and conservation
  • Health care facilities design
  • Energy efficient buildings

Rare research strengths that differentiate the Department:

  • Interdisciplinary collaboration

Contribution to A&M's foundation of excellence:

  • Design thinking (see below)

Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary strengths for society's grand challenges:

  • Design thinking. Broadly, this is the ability to synthesise diverse variables simultaneously as a means to inventing alternative future scenarios. More specifically, design thinking, also referred to as 'integrative thinking' and 'architectural thinking', provides the means to interlink different disciplines, as well as to integrate different subjects within a discipline. This strength enables the Department to work with other disciplines in the development of new products, services and processes. It is therefore strategic since it underpins all disciplines in the University and has the potential to realign intellectual resources in a way that realizes disciplinary disarmament, which matches the realties of society. This is sort of thinking that is now required by society to solve its diverse problems.
