J. Craig Beale

Biography

Craig Beale ’71 (ARCH) serves on HKS’s four-man executive committee, overseeing the firm’s current and future vision and direction. He has dedicated his career to healthcare architecture. After graduating from Texas A&M with a Bachelor of Environmental Design, he obtained a Master of Architecture with focus on health facilities from Rice University and a Master of Public Health from the University of Texas. Since 2000, he has directed the HKS Healthcare Group, which has produced more healthcare construction than any other U.S. firm according to Modern Healthcare. He has written more than three dozen articles about health facility planning and design, and is the author of the outpatient facilities portion of the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities Workbook by the Academy of Architecture for Health. He has lectured to over 3,000 practitioners on topics ranging from emergency and cancer center design to health facilities of the next century. He is a Fellow of both the American Institute of Architects, the American College of Healthcare Architects, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He currently sits on the board of the American Association of Healthcare Consultants. He is also a member and an HKS designee to the college’s Health Industry Advisory Council, a frequent visiting critic and adviser to healthcare students, and supporter of the Students Health Environments Research Association. He and his wife endowed the Julie and Craig Beale Professorship in Health Facilities.
