New Developments

Erik Baker was recently named lead development officer and unit head at the Texas A&M College of Architecture. Baker, the college’s senior director of development, joined the Texas A&M Foundation in January 2020. Prior to coming to Texas A&M, Baker served as director of development and alumni engagement for the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture at the University of Oklahoma.

Baker succeeds Larry Zuber, assistant vice president for development and unit head for the College of Architecture, who retired on April 5. During Zuber’s tenure, he helped raise $46.3 million, increasing the college’s total endowment to $37.8 million to support students, faculty and programs.

With Zuber’s retirement, Baker becomes the leader of the college’s development team, which includes Deanna Cowan, development relations coordinator, and the currently vacant position of assistant director of development.

Baker and his team will soon launch a campaign to raise private donations in support of the College of Architecture’s new building, planned for a campus gateway location off of Wellborn Road. The college is gathering input from students, former students, faculty and staff to determine its needs for the new building, and hopes to break ground in the next five years.

“We are very excited to have Erik lead our development team as we embark on this transformational effort to build a new facility,” said Jorge Vanegas, dean of the College of Architecture. “The new building will include classrooms, creative and collaborative spaces, administrative and faculty offices and will leverage new technologies to support the growth of our disciplines for the next 50 years and beyond.”

To honor Zuber’s impact on the college, friends of his established the Zuber Family Study Abroad Scholarship. Students in the College of Architecture are eligible to apply for the scholarship which will support study abroad experiences.
