Pliny is considered one of the originators of the Sustainable Architecture and Planning movement in the U.S. His work has spanned from originating one of the first design build courses in the country using sustainable design procedures in the early 70's to being instrumental in helping formulate national policy and procedures regarding the design and planning professions. His teaching and research covers an equally wide range of subject matter from alternative materials and low impact building systems, biophilia in design, to alternative planning strategies developed from his work with Ian McHarg and many other well know figures in the environmental movement. He teaches undergraduate, graduate and Phd students.

Dr. McNamara's reserach focuses on the advancement of computer graphics and scientific visualization through novel approaches for optimizing an individual's experience when creating, viewing and interacting with virtual spaces. _She investigates new ways to exploit knowledge of human visual perception to produce high quality computer graphics and animations more efficiently. _She is also interested in eye-tracking, her current research combines eye-tracking with subtle image-space modulations to involuntarily draw an observer's gaze to specific image locations. _Other interests include distance perception, geometric simplification and character design.
